STAINLESS STEEL INVESTMENT CASTINGS

Stainless steel investment castings are a process to execute the desired shape of solid stainless steel components by pouring Melton stainless steel into molds for solidification. The stainless steel investment castings process begins with the wax pattern. The wax pattern process produces a ceramic mold, producing stainless steel investment castings.

HISTORY OF STEEL INVESTMENT CASTINGS

Stainless steel casting is a precision method utilized in 1930 and 1940 by the United States of America in the turbine blades of aero-engine casting. After establishing a new China, the Chinese defence industry used this technology and opened many industries and foundries in Liaoning, Guizhou, Beijing, Shaanxi, Hunan, and other places. Till now, china’s stainless steel precision casting process is in the development stage for more improvement.

Investment Casting is a process of ceramics formed around the wax patterns to make a casing for molten metal. Once the wax patterns are formed, they are melted onto a gate procedure, immersed into sand and slurry to develop a layered casting, and then replaced with melted metals such as aluminum, stainless steel, and more.

METALS PARTS USED IN INVESTMENT CASTINGS

The most common metals used in this process are aluminum, bronze, magnesium, carbon steel, and stainless steel. Investment casting assembles turbine blades, medical equipment, firearm components, gears, jewellery, golf club heads, and many other machine components.

Stainless steel is the most prominent defender from corrosion. Stainless steel investment castings have a natural chromium oxide layer that is a good source of anti-corrosive. That’s why stainless steel casting is perfect for military, medical, and industrial applications.

STAINLESS STEEL INVESTMENT CASTING PROCESSES

Silica-sol shell process:

Silica-sol shell process is utilized in the industry of engine parts casting. Due to its stable coating, this technique doesn’t require a chemical hardening process. This method has better resistance to deformation and high temperature. The poor warming of the wax is the most significant disadvantage of this technology.

Water-glass shell process:

The Soviet Union formulates this technology. From the 1950s to 1960, ‘s china accepted this technology process from the Soviets. This process is extensively used in stainless steel investment casting because of its low cost and doesn’t require high raw materials. Dimensional Accuracy is very low in this process, which is the main problem with this technology. China still operates this technology due to its low-cost advantage. MS Machining researchers build advanced improvements in this technology in terms of shell coating, optimizing hardness and composite shells.

Wax Model Assembly:

In this process, inject the wax material into the mould cavity to remove the wax model from the mould once it gets cooler. Repair some wax model deficiency by slots, injection nozzle etc. To assemble, weld the wax model to the casting system, which looks like a tree.

Pouring:

In the Pouring process, under high-temperature bars of stainless steel, dissolve into a liquid. The liquid shell is poured into the surface and set to remain cooler at room temperature. After that eliminates, the blacks and clean sand.

Dewaxing:

In dewaxing, the wax inside the shell is melted using a high-temperature stream, resulting in the cavity pouring into the mold after drain.

Inspection:

Inspection is the primary process before delivery—Dimensional, defects, and material inspection, including in the stainless steel investment casting. After complete inspection then, products can be shipped to the customer.

INVESTMENT CASTINGS USING STAINLESS STEEL ALLOYS

MS Machining has a CAST 300 series to pour stainless steel alloys for investment casting. We will meet all the specifications of AMS, MIL, Federal and ASTM. We have a proper in-house centre for investment casting in stainless steel. And we are specialists in complex casting projects and close tolerance for industries like defence, aerospace and many more.

304: This series is used to cast stainless steel components for household and commercial applications like medical, food, and chemical or mechanical equipment. The best environment for 304 casting for stainless steel is where the air has less corrosive.

304-L: This series is very near to 304. L represents the lower carbon content in this series. Lower Carbon makes the material very adaptable, has good welding performance and has more authentic corrosion resistance. These stainless steel components also apply for food, chemical, plumbing, etc.

316: These series have Ni content. For excessive high in Ni content, 316 stainless steel casting has superior corrosion resistance to 304. This stainless steel casting is fit in harsh air conditions or chemical materials. Such stainless steel components apply for marine defence, auto parts, chemicals, decoration, etc.

316-L: In this, L also represents high Ni. It is much similar to the 316 series. This series component is also used in plumbing, food, and chemical applications.

BENEFITS OF STAINLESS STEEL CASTING

  1. For stainless steel casting, tooling is the elementary step. Tooling is an economical process of casting stainless steel. For casting, quality and machining accuracy, tooling has an essential role.
  2. The stainless steel cast design is very pliable and inexpensive because it casts out the stainless steel products in different sizes and weights. The complex structure of stainless steel is castable. Parts with 3mm thickness and weight from 0.05kgs-80kgs is only permitted for stainless steel casting.
  3. Stainless steel casting is a speedy and repeatable process. Whether it is a large or small production, it can all meet efficiency.
  4. Stainless steel investment casting dimensional accuracy meets certified ISO 8062 CT5-CT6.
  5. Stainless steel surface becomes smooth and bright after shot blasting. With time stainless steel will not get rust.
